Vinay Pathak enthralls even in a strange movie

by Richa on March 30, 2009

Vinay Pathak is known for his unconventional bouquet of films! You name it and you have it!! From “Bheja Fry” to the new one, “Straight”.. he has always been successful in maintaining his unusual style.

‘Straight’ is a strange movie in as much as it is quite different from the usual ones. It explores the twin bogeys of Indians’ virginity and their straightjacket concept of love. The movie is about confused sexual inclinations. Vinay presents the stereotypical image of a Bollywood hero, who is essentially a 40 plus man turning macho flaunting that 8-6 pack abs as he romances ladies half his age. The movie’s hero (Vinay Pathak) plays Pinu Patel. He is a contradiction with his heavy frame and ordinary looks and for never receiving a red carpet welcome in Bollywood. Nevertheless, he is one of the few actors who have managed to establish a connection with the audiences through their impeccable choice of roles and ingenious performances! The title, “Straight, Pinu Patel ki Tedhi Medhi Love Story”, is a contradiction in itself..

According to the story, Vinay Pathak (Pinu) is a London-based restaurateur who is saddled with his virginity till doomsday! After all, he thinks that he doesn’t have the moves to charm a girl, and he attributes this to his effusive, overtly affectionate cook-cum-stand-up comedian played by Ayush Choudhry. Faced with this dilemma, he begins dreaming about the boyish Ayush who just happens to plant a kiss on his lips and follows him like a puppy dog. The matter gets more complex when the straight-jacketed Pinu fails to fall for a pretty Gul Panag who is his comely cashier, and instead gets cozy towards his gay cook. This shows his sex preference, and he doesn’t mince words and confesses it. He seeks his gay cousin Gujju’s advice and says that love is love, irrespective of the which way – straight or gay.

The hero in Vinay Pathak is light-hearted. So, the film cruises along the never trodden but cemented as a tedha-medha (unconventional) path by Vinay Pathak. In spite of all this, he dares to go solo.

The Bharat Bhushan of his debut flick ‘Bheja Fry’ or the intense heart rendering act of a cancer patient trying to live life to the hilt in ‘Dasvidaniya’, Vinay Pathak has done justice to each of his roles from that of a host to a prominent theatre personality to now being a profound actor. He is all set to woo us through his film ‘Straight- Pinu Patel Ki Tedhi Medhi Love Story’. Vinay stirs quite a curiosity about the latest trend of same sex relationships though he denies it.

He continues to explain that “the movie is about a man named Pinu Patel, who is confused about his sexual orientation. He is over 30 and is still single. Though he tries his best to fall in love he is unable to find a soul mate, which makes him question his sexual preferences. It’s then that a woman comes into his life, but he still remains confused. So the story goes to show how he finds his true love and true inclination. He explains his “KISS” approach by elaborating it as ‘Keep it Simple & Straight’.
